Located in Philadelphia, Independence Media has transformed a traditional non-commercial television operation into a new multi-platform media company. The new operation includes broadcast of analog and digital signals in accordance with the FCC license to operate WYBE Channel 35 (NTSC) / Channel 34 (DT). Additionally the WYBE broadcast signal is carried on all local cable providers and satellite service. Independence Media also provides 24/7 IPTV (video streaming), and an internet VOD system. The local broadcast signal reaches 6 million viewers in 12 counties (17 counties in 2009); the internet operation provides global service.

This hands-on position includes custom designed internal and external software application operates the program services. The IT infrastructure more closely aligned with newer internet distribution technologies than with traditional television operations. As we grow this unique non-profit venture, the Engineer/Administrator will plan and implement additional functionality for use by staff and by the general public, both in the Philadelphia region and throughout the world.

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Video Broadcast Server: Development and deployment of a custom server for the delivery of broadcast-quality assets to local and remote transmission facilities.
  • Software: development, implementation, and testing of enhancements to MiND Control (our custom content management system) and to other systems.
  • Websites: Programming and all updates to mindtv.org, IndependenceMedia.org and increasing range of websites with varying degrees of complexity and features.
  • Databases: Administration, management, maintenance, upgrades to databases
    • Filemaker, MIP (accounting), Raiser’s Edge (fund-raising); Protrack (broadcast scheduling),
  • Development of new integrated, databases, application software, tools, enhancements, etc.; additional integration and development; new/improved processes made possible by technology.

Preferred Experience:

  • Requires basic knowledge of Linux environment for integration to existing MiND software
    • Expertise in variety of database and web languages and protocols, including but not limited to SQL, PHP, Perl, Java, html (css).
  • Five (5) years in software development with emphasis on database programming/administration, web programming, and the integration of these and other services. Knowledge of open-source solutions and technologies preferred.
  • Planning and implementation; ease in working across departments, and with clients and outside services
  • Past role in start-ups, or similarly complex, dynamic organizations
  • B.A. or B.S. required
